Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Bahram Qasemi said the tourists visited Iran for historical, cultural, natural and religious purposes.
They also attended conferences and scientific meetings, he added.
He went on to say that 511 tourists came to Iran for pilgrimage and 536 more for other purposes.
Last year, 2,325 American tourists travelled to Iran, Qasemi said, adding that the figure was 6,372 tourists two years ago.
Deputy Head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran Vali Teymouri said over 400,000 American tourists visit Iran annually.

Tehran, Jan 2, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has rejected claims that 400,000 American tourists visit Iran annually, saying 1,879 tourists visited Iran in the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year of 1397 (started March 21, 2018).
