China urges all parties to stay committed to JCPOA

Beijing, Jan 18, IRNA – China’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying during her regular press conference on Tuesday urged all parties to stay committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

She said China believed “the JCPOA is an international agreement reached by the P5+1 countries and Iran and formally approved by the UN Security Council.”

“We think that Parties should continue to earnestly carry out their obligations and solve differences through consultations to ensure the continued implementation of the agreement,” she added.

The Chinese spokeswoman further described the JCPOA “as a successful example of solving international hotspot issues through political and diplomatic means,” adding, “In general, last year witnessed the smooth implementation of the JCPOA.”

She also stressed that the agreement is widely supported and recognized by the international community.

“Last week, the JCPOA joint commission held its sixth meeting, in which representatives from the P5+1 countries and Iran reviewed major issues such as lifting sanctions, measures in the nuclear field and the renovation of Arak heavy water reactor, and reaffirmed their political commitment to earnestly implementing the agreement,” she noted.

Hua further underscored that “China has actively participated in, promoted and contributed to the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue. With an objective, just and responsible attitude, we have been committed to promoting the negotiation and implementation of the JCPOA. Especially as the co-chair of the working group on the renovation of Arak heavy water reactor, China has made huge efforts in this project.”

She also noted that 'China is ready to maintain close cooperation with various parties to ensure the sustained, comprehensive and effective implementation of the agreement.”

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 and came into effect in January 2016. The six world powers were committed to lifting sanctions against Iran and the country in turn agreed to limit some of its nuclear program in certain areas.

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the implementation day of the deal, the United Nations, the European Union and the US officials as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency have confirmed Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement and voiced support for its continuation.
