Iranian journalist's detention continuation of US pressure: Expert

Moscow, Jan 21, IRNA - A Russian expert highlighted that detention of Iranian Press TV journalist in the United States is part of the country's pressure on Iran and preventing the continuation of free and independent media.

Irina Feodurova, a senior member of the Institute of Orientalogy Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in Moscow, said that Marzieh Hashemi had not committed any crime, noting, 'This person has been detained with the aim of scaring and putting pressure on her.

She added that this is a violation of the international obligations of the country in respect for journalists, according to which all countries are bound to respect journalists' rights.

Referring to the claim that Ms. Hashemi was imprisoned as a leading witness in a case without any charges, the Russian scholar pointed out, 'No where a witness is placed in jail and such a procedure is not compatible with the US claims for allegations respecting the rights of journalists and principles of freedom of expression.'

The expert reiterated that the American officials should respect the basic rights of journalists and not to prevent their professional activities.”

Feodorova said that the various media in the world should work together to release the Iranian journalist in the United States, and international organizations to defend the rights of journalists and the media should also mention the international obligations of the United States.
