Iran army comdr, Azeri president discuss boosting bilateral ties

Baku, Jan 16, IRNA – The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri met President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday to explore ways of further expansion of mutual relataions.

'Due to the emphasis of Iran and Azerbaijan's leaders to strengthen and expand long-term ties, the cooperation between the countries stands at a very high level,' said Major General Baqeri.

Referring to the historical and religious commonalities of the two countries, he said, 'Iran and Azerbaijan are cooperating in economic, political, military, and security fields.'

Both countries are interested in peace and security of the region and are trying to achieve it, General Baqeri said, adding that Tehran and Baku are also interested in expanding their military and technological cooperation to secure their borders.

He also expressed Iran's readiness to exchange experience with the Republic of Azerbaijan in fighting terrorism.

A military-defensive memorandum of understanding is scheduled to be signed at the end of General Baqeri's visit to Azerbaijan.

Upon arriving in Baku, Azerbaijan's Republic, on Wednesday, Major General Baqeri told the Islamic Republic News Agency that the aims of his visit to Baku are defense and security related and also expansion of the collaborations between the two nations.

He said that this is the first visit by such a high-ranking military delegation to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The two-day visit is made at the official invitation of Azerbaijan's defense minister.

During his stay, General Baqeri is to visit the country's Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov, Prime Minister Novruz Mammadov and Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov, as well.

This is the fifth visit of the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces to a regional country in the past two years. The Iranian general had already visited Russia, Turkey, Syria and Pakistan.

Arriving in Baku, General Baqeri and the accompanying team was welcomed by Ali-Akbar Ojaqnejad, Iran's Supreme Leader's Representative in Azerbaijan, Javad Jahangiri, Iran's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Republic, and a group of Azeri military officials.
