Iran embassy in Hungary says sports diplomacy priority

Belgrade, Jan 10, IRNA – Iran's Ambassador to Hungary Gholam-Reza Rajabi-Yazdi says sports diplomacy is among priorities of Iranian Embassy's programs in the Eastern European nation.

Talking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Thursday, Rajabi-Yazdi said regarding the influential role of sports in connecting nations and getting them together in a healthy and peaceful environment, sports cooperation between Iran and Hungary is among priorities of the programs due to be implemented by Iranian Embassy in Hungary.

He said world states consider sports events as the most influential soft power tool and try to hold competitions to have active presence in the world federations and use sports figures' influence to forge stronger engagement of nations and governments.

He went on to say that the second-round qualifiers to the 2017 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship – Women, held in Jászberény of Hungary in September and Iranian Free Style and Greco Roman national teams' presence in the 2018 World Wrestling Championships, held in Budapest from October 20 to 28, and also presence of Hungarian wrestlers in the World Clubs' Free-Style Cup Competitions in December along with presence of Iranian National Youth Boxing Team in Hungary World Boxing Competitions are among sports programs of Iran and Hungary.

He added that 2019 will mark a turning point in expansion of sports cooperation between Iran and Hungary as Iranian athletes will take part in table tennis competitions in Hungary next week, Iran's national boxing team will attend Hungary world boxing competitions in February, Iran's Greco-Roman wrestling team will attend Hungary International competitions late February, Hungary's badminton players will attend Ten-Day Dawn competitions, Iranian Paralympics athletes will attend Tokyo 2020 Paralympics qualifying competitions in Hungary.
