ECO veterinary forum to be held in Tehran

Tehran, Oct 3, IRNA -- Director General of the specialized organizations of Iran's Veterinary Organization, said the the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Veterinary Forum will be held in Tehran from October 14-16, with the participation of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran.

Bahman Abedi said at a press conference on Wednesday that the meeting will be held at the level of the veterinary authorities of the ECO member states and will focus on such issues as management of transboundary diseases, the establishment of reference laboratories between member countries and cooperation on transit of livestock.

He continued, 'The development of a roadmap for controlling diseases such as fever, PPR and hypertensive birds influenza, the acquisition of a single health certificate, trade in meat and dairy products, as well as drug cooperation, vaccine is another issue which ECO veterinarians will discuss.

According to him, any decision made by the six countries present at the Tehran summit will require the whole members of the ECO to implement it.

He said, 'The eco-veterinary sector has long been defined by the veterinary authorities of the member states in the field development of veterinary cooperation. The first ECO veterinary meeting was held in Antalya, Turkey,10 years ago.

Abedi said without international cooperation, there is no prospect of success in national measures to combat livestock diseases.

The ECO is a regional economic organization founded by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey in 1964, after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1993 and Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan joined it later on.
