Share of Iran's goods transported by sea hits 90%

Tehran, Sept 3, IRNA - Deputy Head of Maritime Affairs of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization said the volume of goods transported in Iran by the sea reached 90 percent, while the world's average is 80 percent by sea, reaching 10 billion tons in 2017.

Hadi Haghshenas added,' Iran has access to free waters in the north and south, and this has a great advantage for transporting in Iran, and among the various transportation routes, sea transportation is due to high safety, short route and high volume are affordable, and large ships are designed to have a capacity of 22,000 containers.

'Safety, security and environmental issues are three points of interest to the shipping fleet, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has begun its activities 70 years ago and has 174 countries, and it is noteworthy that the 20 member-states of the IMO are landlocked which indicates the importance of this organization and marine matters.

Deputy Director of Maritime Affairs of Ports and Maritime Organization said about 70 new ship will be constructed over the next three years, based on the plan for the development of the country's maritime industry and production line.

Haghshenas announced the celebration ceremony of World Sailing Day by IMO in Iran and said the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the International Organization for Migration (IMO) in Tehran will be held in Tehran in September 17th.
