Saudi Arabia must stop warmongering: Iran UN envoy

New York, March 28, IRNA – Saudi rulers have turned their secret support for extremism into warmongering adventurism, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) said here on Wednesday while cautioning Riyadh against such moves.

For three years, Saudi Arabia has been bombarding Yemen which has brought nothing but destruction, massacre, hunger and illness for Yemenis, Gholam Ali Khoshroo told Iranian media in New York.

He made the remarks in response to the recent letter by Saudi government to the UN in which Riyadh alleged that missiles fired from Yemen to Saudi Arabia were Iranian.

Riyadh, in order to conceal its crimes in Yemen, Khoshroo said, has repeatedly been making groundless allegations against Tehran.

Iran rejects Saudis' unfounded claims and believes that solving Yemeni crisis has no way but political solution, the ambassador added.

It is not the first time that Saudi Arabia writes an anti-Iran letter in order to hide its defeats in Yemen, Khoshroo said. 'Global community is well aware of this reality.'

He also said that Saudi Arabia should respect rights of Yemenis and enter constructive talks with its neighbor [Yemen].

Khoshroo stressed that Iran sees Saudi attack on the Yemeni people as illegal and illegitimate.

Iran calls on Saudi Arabia to join the peace process soon which preserves the rights of the Yemeni people, Khoshroo said adding that Riyadh's actions have not helped ensure peace but instead expanded terrorist groups of Daesh and al Qaeda to Yemen.

Expressing regret over selling weapons to Saudi Arabia by the US which are used against the defenseless Yemeni civilians, the envoy said that big powers have been cooperating with Riyadh in killing the Yemeni people.

The Iranian UN ambassador called on the Islamic world and the global community to put pressure on Saudi Arabia to halt fratricide in Yemen and stressed that the Saudi policies should be changed.

'Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia has not learnt lessons from its past wrong measures,' Khoshroo said concluding it would be dangerous for Riyadh to support warmongering adventurism.
