Indian media welcome Iranian president’s upcoming visit

New Delhi, Feb 14, IRNA - Indian media enthusiastically welcomed the upcoming visit of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to the country which is scheduld to start on Thursday.

“India is all set to host Iranian President Hassan Rouhani later this week reasserting the growing ties between the two countries that is expected to strengthen New Delhi’s relationship with the larger west Asia world,” Business Line wrote.

The Z News network referring to Rouhani’s schedule in India wrote, “Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, who is visiting India this week, will offer Friday prayers at the historic Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad and will also address the gathering.”

“After his arrival on Thursday evening, the Iranian President will interact with selected 'ulema' or religious scholars of both Shia and Sunni sects, intellectuals, and academicians.”

Hyderabad has historic cultural links with Iran. The city, founded by Quli Qutub Shah, was designed on the lines of Iranian city Isfahan.

Mir Momin Astrabadi, who had migrated from Iran and prepared the design of Charminar and Hyderabad, according to the Z News. There are more than 1,000 Iranians living in the city, whose forefathers had migrated from Iran.

“Financial Express” also focused on the visit. 'During the visit, Rouhani and Indian leaders will discuss, the latest regional and global developments and the finalization and exploitation of Chabahar port as soon as possible that can be very effective for bilateral trade in the region and mutual access of Afghanistan to regional and international markets.”

“India’s oil imports will also be high on the agenda since Iran continues to be a major supplier of oil to this country. PM Modi is expected to brief President Rouhani on his just-concluded visit to Palestine and reiterate India’s unwavering support for the cause of the Palestinians in the backdrop of President Trump’s move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Indian news channel “NDTV” reported on its website.

Economic Times daily while reporting on Rouhani’s visit to India commented, 'The Narendra Modi government is ready to roll out the red carpet for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani this week. Rouhani's visit will give a major boost to connectivity projects, infra investments, energy ties, including Farzad B gas field and security cooperation.”

The visit itself is a reflection of India's balanced foreign policy approach as the trip takes place less than two months after the Israeli PM's visit to India. Rouhani is visiting at a time when the US President Donald Trump has kept Iran on tenterhooks with warnings of fresh sanctions as well as threats to pull out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement, wrote the Times.
