Foreign tourists in Yazd up by %34 in 9 months

Yazd, Dec 29, IRNA – In the first nine months of the current Iranian year (beginning on March 21, 2017), the number of foreign tourists in Yazd Province increased by 34 percent, a local official said.

The acting director of Tourism Department in Iran Cultural Heritage Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Mohammad Reza Nasiri, told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Thursday that the number in the nine-month period rose to 96,000.

The figure in the same period last year was 73,000, he said.

Nasiri noted that the majority of the tourists were from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, China and The Netherlands.

Nasiri said that registering the city of Yazd on the world Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) this year certainly played a big role in the growth of he number of foreign tourists who chose to visit Yazd.

'It is estimated that some 140,000 tourists visit Yazd by the end of this year,' he said, adding that if the prediction turns out to be correct, the growth will be 20 percent compared to the number of last year.

UNESCO put the name of Yazd on World Heritage List during its 41st session on July 2-12 in Krakow, Poland.
