Iran capable of countering US threats: Iran's envoy

Baghdad, Oct 13, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi said the Islamic Republic is capable of confronting US threats, stressing that Iran is quite serious on defending its national securiry.

'Iran does not threaten any country, but if the Americans start doing so, they will be responsible for consequences of the threats,' he told Iraqi TV Network Al-Ahd, referring to recent rhetoric of US President Donald Trump against Iran.

Iran’s envoy also pointed out that Tehran is not seeking enmity and hostility with any country including the US, he said.

Touching on the 2015 nuclear deal and US threats against it, the ambassador said, 'the international pact is the outcome of marathon negotiations involving Iran and six major world powers.'

Reiterating that Iran’s policy has always been based on defense not offense, he said that the Americans have posed the entire region to dangers through their threats.

Iran’s relations with different ethnic and religious groups in Iraq such as Kurds, Arabs, Shia and Sunni Muslims are excellent, the ambassador concluded.
