AUA chief: World astonished by Iranians' participation in elections

Orumiyeh, May 19, IRNA - Secretary-General of Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA) said on Friday that the glorious Iranian ethnic and religious groups' participation in the country’s elections reflected their maturity of thought and astonished the world.

Iranian people in the “political epic of elections” showcased their solidarity at polling stations and gave a big lesson to the world, Yonathan Betkolia told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Friday.

Voting stations opened in Iran at 8am local time (03:30 GMT) on Friday for the 12th presidential and the fifth city and village council elections in about 63,500 polling stations.

Saying that today the world is astonished by Iranians’ unity, the Assyrian and Chaldean representative at Iran’s parliament (Majlis) added that the country’s ethnic and religious groups, from Kurds to Turks, Christians and Zoroastrians had always actively played their roles in various social and political arenas.

Pointing to the 90 percent turnout of the religious minorities, particularly the Assyrians, in Iran’s previous elections, he asserted that whoever is elected as the president in the current election would be respected by all ethnic communities.

AUA secretary-general had called on people, particularly the member of the Assyrian community to vote in the elections.

In addition to the 12th presidential election and the fifth city and village councils election, by-election is also being held in some cities to choose representatives for a number of vacant parliament seats.
