Senior sunni cleric urges massive participation of people in elections

Tehran, May 19, IRNA - Molavi Abdolhamid, a senior sunni Iranian cleric on Friday urged massive turnout of both shia and sunni Iranians in the local and presidential elections, adding that the elections have the message of peace for the world.

The cleric made the remarks after casting his votes in the presidential and local elections.

He said that people should not follow the enemies’ recommendations for not participating in the polling.

Both shia and sunni Iranians should be united in taking part in elctions, the sunni cleric added.

Massive turnout of people in the elections will show the world how consolidated are the Iranian people and will demonstrate existence of peace and security in the country, he noted.

Presidential as well as city and village councils elections are being held across Iran on Friday.

The presidential candidates include President Hassan Rouhani, Custodian of Imam Reza (AS) Holy Shrine Ebrahim Raeisi, former minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mostafa Aqa Mirsalim and former minister of Physical Education Mostafa Hashemi Taba.

According to the reports, over 56 million of Iranians are eligible to go to the polls. Out of the total eligible voters over 1.3 million are those who vote for the first time.
