Speaker: Active participation in elections produces good results

Qom, May 19, IRNA – Iranian people's full participation in the elections will bring fine achievements to the country, says Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani.

“The role of the presidential election in the development and progress of the country is even more important,” said Larijani after casting his vote in a mosque in the holy city of Qom while referring to the ongoing elections including the city and village councils and Majlis by-elections.

“People’s strong presence in the election can bring security to the country and deter the enemies particularly in the present chaotic situation in the region,” he also said.

“The executive officials should definitely protect people's votes with high precision,” he further said.

“I hope the elections will be recorded in the history as the great Iranian nation’s support for the Islamic Republic,” the speaker said, appreciating media’s efforts and roles in holding the elections.

The 12th presidential and the fifth city and village council elections are still going on with the active participation of people.

Polling stations are open from 8am until 6pm local time (3:30am to 1:30pm GMT) although authorities have announced that the country's 63,500 polling stations could extend their voting time if necessary.
