Iran, Azerbaijan plan to launch direct train service

Tehran, March 5, IRNA - A train will run twice a week between Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan and Iran’s Mashad, an Iranian envoy told Trend News Agency.

In a meeting in Nakhchivan on Thursday, Iran’s Consul General Mansour Airom said that Javid Gurbanov, head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and Abbas Haj-Fathalian, a member of the board of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, discussed the plan to operate direct service along the Nakhchivan-Jolfa-Tabriz-Tehran-Mashhad railway route.

The diplomat further said that Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi and Azerbaijani Minister of Economy Shahin Mustafayev signed a document named ‘Framework Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the coordination of railways of Azerbaijan and Iran’ in a meeting in Tehran on February 23.

Airom said that a couple of the articles in the framework agreement considered railway cooperation between the two countries, adding that the Thursday meeting was aimed at laying a ground for launching the plan.

He said that the train trips will become operational once technical studies on the procedure of ticket sale and also the customs services by both sides are conducted.

Airom added that the plan is expected to be finalized following a meeting of the heads of the railway administrations of Iran and Azerbaijan in March.
