EU parliament president expresses concern over regional developments

Tehran, Feb 17, IRNA – Increase of the number of refugees as the result of crisis in the Middle East is very concerning, President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednsday.

Schulz called the regional developments as worrying and urged fighting Daesh (ISIL) by all means necessary.

Speaking about the refugee crisis in Europe, president of the European Parliament expressed concern over increase of the number of refugees as the result of instability in the region.

Schulz welcome expansion of Iran and EU relations.

The European refugee crisis began in 2015, when a rising number of refugees and migrants made the journey to the European Union to seek asylum, travelling across the Mediterranean Sea or through Southeast Europe. They came from areas such as Western and South Asia, Africa, and the Western Balkans. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the top three nationalities of the over one million Mediterranean Sea arrivals in 2015 were Syrian (49%), Afghan (21%) and Iraqi (8%).
