Iran to cut meat import

Tehran, May 22, IRNA – Deputy Minister of Agriculture highlighted last year’s cut in meat imports and hoped imports would further reduce in the current year.

Referring to last year’s 20 thousand kilogram cut in meat imports, Hassan Rokni expressed hope to have less imports in the current year.

Answering questions posed by journalists, Rokni touched upon the surge in poultry meat production and egg harvesting and called it up to relevant syndicates to make the appropriate decisions but if they needed help the government would support them, MNA reported.

Deciding about exporting poultry meat, the deputy minister emphasized the priority of domestic demand to be met at first and called exports of second priority, though the administration favors boost in exports.

Rokni reaffirmed the importance of dairy products in public dietary and reassured that the administration backs milk products in Iran.

Commenting on annual domestic production of 800 thousand tons of red meat, he also recounted that last year 60000 tons of red meat was imported compared the year before that it was 90 thousand tones. Hailing the decrease, Rokni hoped to have more cuts in the current year.
