Iranians develop antibiotic from turmeric

Tehran, March 4, IRNA - Iranian researchers have presented curcumin-loaded chitosan tripolyphosphate nanoparticles as an effective antibiotic that inhibits the infection of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, it was reported on Wednesday.

According to an English-language newspaper, Mirza Ali Mofazzal Jahromi from Tarbiat Modares University and Reza Mirnejad and Mehdi Kamali, faculty members of Baqiyatallah Medical University, were main researchers of the study.

Jahromi noted that curcumin is a natural yellow compound extracted from turmeric root, which has antibacterial properties, 'Iran daily' reported.

“One of the nanoparticle’s ability is to reduce the defects of usual drug delivery systems,” he said.

Jahromi noted that chitosan is a low toxic, biodegradable, biocompatible and natural polymer used in the production of drug nanocarriers.

Nanoparticles like chitosan-tripolyphosphate (TPP) are able to increase the antibacterial properties of curcumin.

Curcumin-loaded chitosan-TPP nanoparticles containing chitosan, curcumin and TPP salt were synthesized. The skin of anesthetized mice was inoculated with staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa suspension. Then the infected mice were treated with curcumin-loaded chitosan-TPP nanoparticles.

Results of the study indicated that curcumin-loaded chitosan-TPP nanoparticles inhibited staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa growth and can be utilized as a potent agent in treatment of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common bacterium that can cause disease in animals, including humans. The symptoms of such infections are generalized inflammation and sepsis.

If such colonization were to occur in critical body organs, such as the lungs, the urinary tract and kidneys, the results can be fatal.

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium found in the human respiratory tract and on the skin. It is a common cause of skin infections, respiratory disease and food poisoning.
