Iranian Army ends special mission in western borders

Tehran, Feb 22, IRNA – Ground Force of the Iranian Army ended its special mission in the country's western borders where it had adopted a special arrangement following the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIS) entered Iraq, a senior Army official told IRNA on Sunday.

Deputy Commander Brigadier General Kiumars Heidari told IRNA exclusively that troops of the Army Ground Force were completely prepared to confront any possible terrorist operations on the border areas following the arrival of Daesh terrorists in Iraq close to the Iranian borders.

'The Iranian Army set a redline for Daesh terrorists some 40 kilometers inside the Iraqi soil warning them not to cross that,' said the commander noting that the terrorist group 'got the message and speedily evacuated the area.'

'Now 45 days after sending the redline warning, the special arrangement of the Ground Force has come to an end,' Commander Heidari said.

However, he added that 'various units of the Ground Force, artillery units in particular, are present throughout the Iranian border areas, including in western borders of the country, but they are not currently on a special mission.'

Commander of Army's Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan had earlier told IRNA that Iran had drawn a red line for terrorist groups 40 km inside the Iraqi territory.

The commander said, “When members of the terrorist and Takfiri group of Daesh (ISIS) entered Iraq from its western borders and approached the Iranian border areas, the Army Ground Force became fully prepared to counter them.”

“In that time,' added Commander Pourdastan, “We made them (terrorists) understand that if they crossed that red line, they would face crushing response by the Iranian Armed Forces. We noticed that the Takfiri terrorists had received our message and left the area immediately.”

Stressing that Iran’s Armed Forces are fully prepared to safeguard the country’s border areas in any moment, the commander said “every moves of the terrorist groups inside Iraq is under full supervision of the Iranian forces.”
